M A R K I N G S

M A R K I N G S is a journey through Nubian & Ancient Egyptian history, where we explored permanent body decoration -today known as tattoos- that helped define boundaries of social groups and sub-groups within society by marking differences in status and role.

Tattoo history is difficult to document and identify, however in various subcultures in Ancient Egypt, it is evident that a lot of the skin markings were used on women to signify a rite of passage into adulthood, fertility, speculation around the female deity among other societal & religious purposes.

While the reasons for tattooing can change over time, the end result is still permanent marking, an enculturalisation of the body. M A R K I N G S, marking the 6th capsule collection for Saqhoute is an attempt to explore the reasons spanning across millennia in forever changing how our skin looks and what it means.
